This a wonderful French engraved & hand chased (with a slight gold vermeil finish on the inside of the cup ) little demitasse cup & saucer with very intricate and fancy detailing. It has a Rocaille motive in the Louis XV style with floral design on left side of the ornate emblem / shield and Cat Tails designs on the right side( where a monogram would be engraved ) with a scalloped shell design on top of the cup and at the bottom of the cup with waves of water design. The saucer has the same scalloped and waves of water design. The cup measures 2 3/8" across the top, 1 1/2" across the bottom, 3 1/4" across with the handle and is 1 7/8" tall. The saucer measures 4 1/4" in length and is 1 5/8" across the center indentation for the cup. The rim on the saucer is quite thick and has some good weight, along with the cup weigh 128 grams. This cup and saucer dates from around 1838 and has the guarantee silver mark of 95% with Minerve 1st Titre.( Head of Minerva with Number 1 near the forehead .950 silver standard ) This 1st Titre mark designates the highest level of silver content. It has the maker's mark inside a lozenge and is marked "A W Espouir". This design is a kind of Repousse Rocaille flame pattern. The chasing in French is "Ciselee", which means a special little knife or scissor type implement is used like a chisel. The handle is ornately chased as well with very intricate detailing. We have another French demitasse cup & saucer listed that is very similar to this one / RL-3264. The handle on this cup / RL-3265 is not quite as heavy looking or as thick as the other cup and saucer, but is almost identical in style and shape ( but is more petite looking ).
