This chunky carved black brooch is made of animal horn. It is an oval shape with a raised top; the top is carved in a Celtic design. The edge of the pin has holes pierced through it along with decorative carving. It measures 1 7/8" X 1 1/2" X 1/2" thick. The pin dates from 1880, as the English registry mark on the clasp testifies. This black piece is mourning jewelry, popularized by Queen Victoria. Her husband, Prince Albert, was Scottish and died young; she mourned for decades. The pin is in excellent original condition.
