This long, narrow box held a lady's gloves, a basic item of apparel during the late nineteenth century. It is light-weight wood with a coating of celluloid, one of the first plastics. The box is decorative; a cartouche on the lid shows a boy and girl feeding a lamb. There are blue bachelors buttons framing the children. Such sentimental scenes appealed to the Victorians. The cartouche is yellow; the remainder of the box is dark green and gold with star flowers. There is a brass latch. The bottom is figured wall-paper. The inside is lined with blue silk, not perfect, but passable. This box is 12" long, 3 1/2" wide, and 2 1/2" deep. It is in excellent vintage condition.
