This is an original woodblock print from 1895 printed on very fine rice paper.
The frame, made to look like bamboo is painted in black with some gold accents. It measures 15 1/2" x 11 1/8" while the print itself (without the backing paper) measures 13 1/2" x 8 3/4".
The subject is variously called Firefly Hunting - Ladies at Chiyoda Palace or as it is written in English script on the back of the print itself is, "A girl catching fireflies".
The condition is good - there is some foxing and browning of the backing paper. Since the framing dates from the late 50s or early 1960's should be redone with all archival materials to further preserve this wonderful print.
Chikanobu (1838-1912) is a well-recognized ukiyo-e artist. Many of his prints have been represented and sold through very reputable auction houses. We are in the process of listing three other Chikanobu prints acquired from the same estate and all are framed the same way.
