Exquisite Lavender (Lilac) and White Jasperware Plaque - Musical Theme with Tambourine (#2)

This is one of a pair of plaques we recently acquired. The mate is listed separately. The last photo shows them hung together (note that the light makes them look like a different color but they are the same beautiful shade of lavender).

Both depict beautiful women in relief. This one has a kneeling tambourine player with a gorgeous, diaphanously clad woman with a bird on her arm dancing nearby. The dancer has long flowy hair and seems to be dancying with ribbons in both hands. The scene is overlooked by a mask in the upper center. The sides show the caps of pillars and what appears to be vines growing around the pillars. The bottom corners have shell-like forms. Certainly a turn-of-the-century concoction - neo-classical themes with a late Victorian feel with a bit of Art Nouveau sensuousness thrown in for good measure!

One thing is for certain - this and it's mate are stunning to look at. Simply yummy!

Each plaque measures 8" x 6 1/4" and except for a bit of 'schmutz' (otherwise known as age-related dirt) they are in superbly excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs! We did give it a light bath in soapy water and removed most of the surface grime, but the closeups reveals a few missed spots!

There is a hanging wire on the back. Also, each plaque has a 2 and a 4 digit number impressed into the piece. In the 'trade' it is commonly thought that these impressed digits indicate Schafer & Vater, but more then likely they are codes for the shape, size, and subject the factory used. Undoubtedly of German origins though. The quality is testimony to that.

Please note that we have NEVER seen plaques like this in this color. We have seen them with a green background with lavender trim and white figures but never in just lavender and white. Very, very striking.
