Looking like carved ivory, this magnificent inkwell does not only have a beautiful Asian design in relief, but is also in a beautiful shape and size.
We think this inkwell is the 'star' of the Rudolstadt Oriental line and is very rare. Sometimes found in blue and white, but rarely in this ivory shade which is clearly how it was meant to be shown originally!
Each panel and the top has a different scene. The camfered corners are decorated in a hexagonal paving pattern - probably represent an architectural feature like a wall. There are even a couple of places where the herringbone pattern of real ivory is simulated!
The inkwell is quite large - measuring 4 3/4" high. The bottom portion measures approx. 2 7/8" x 2 7/8". The insert is present and is quite stained with ink from former usage - just as it should be!
This one will be hard to part with, but as always, our treasurers have been purchased with you in mind - we just have the pleasure of living with them until you are ready to part with your shekels!
