This wonderful orchid pin is the smaller sister to the huge orchid pin (item #twt 2868) separately listed and shown in photos. That one measures 3 1/2" x 2 3/4" while this one measures 2 1/2" x 2 1/4".
The petals and other parts are all accented by rows of shiny faceted marcasites. The sterling silver has been modelled to make the petals appear ruffled in a very skillful way to emulate the way the real-life cattleya orchid is formed. The petals are enamelled in shades of purple and mauve with a mottling of rusty-orange flecks and a great complimentary contrasting green. The center of the 'cup' features a hint of golden yellow.
On page 162 of the book, 'Antique Enameled Jewelry', a similar orchid pin is depicted. This one far exceeds that pin in size, color, and quality. Even the way the pinback spans the back of the pin shows better construction. You will be thrilled with this pin. A true knockout. I am tempted to keep it to wear as my 'signature' piece of jewelry. It is that gorgeous and that commanding of attention. So...if you see it disappear without it being marked "sold" soon, you'll know it made its way into my private collection!
The condition is outstanding - excellent in every way. On the back side the tip of one of the petals is marked 'sterling' with no maker's hallmark. We believe this was made in Germany and likely designed by Alice Caviness. Over the years we have had other enamel and sterling orchid pins and some have been marked Germany.
A couple of the photos show this orchid pin alongside the 'huge' big sister one so you can get an idea of their similarities and relative scale.
