Here is another of the beautiful fan-shaped pins featuring enamel butterflies! Irresistable! (Note that we have another turquoise and coral one listed separetely if still available).
This wonderful pin is featured front and center on the cover of Dale Reeves Nicholls book, Antique Enameled Jewelry. It is also shown and described on page 152. This is exactly the same pin but in a different colorway (in our opinion, a much more interesting and pretty colorway).
This vintage pin, in excellent condition, measures 2 1/2" across and is gilt silver (aka vermeil) with turquoise dangles. Ca. 1920, Chinese Export period. The dangles represent the silk tassels usually found on the handles of fans. The pinback has a rollover safety clasp.
The lovely larger butterfly features many different colors ranging from lime green to bright blue to purple. There are 5 cabochon turquoise stones that are bezel set which are then framed by an upper and lower row of smaller blue enamelled butterflies. There is a small dot of bright blue enamel on the very bottom that ties in with the turquoise dangles.
On the back side, you can see the fretwork and a tiny plaque that says 'silver'. It tests for sterling grade silver (925/1000 parts silver).
Dale Reeves Nicholls values this brooch in the $350.00-450.00 and it is featured on the cover of her book (shown in last photo). We have had this pin before in yet a fourth colorway and it sold very quickly. That was a few years ago and because of the demand for Chinese items today, we think the book value is now truly reflective of the marketplace but we have chosen to match our earlier pricing to make it more accessible to you. It can easily become the focal point, just as it did for the book cover, of your own collection (note...a similar pin is currently listed on Ruby Lane for much higher)!
