This is the largest and best condition one we have ever seen! It measures 7" long and the fantail is 5" wide by 4" long!!
It is in amazing, vintage condition. All details stated below and illustrated with 9 photos.
The googly eyes are also referred to as 'telescoping' eyes - very apropros.
Besides the enormous size, the other features that make this fish very, very special include the appearance of pink enamel (rare), it is marked under the tail with a small plaque with an impressed 'silver' mark. These are rarely found marked. A typical 'large' fish is around 3 1/2" and this being twice the size is indeed a sight to behold!
In addition the condition is amazing. Often, fish of this age (ca. late 1890's-1920) have significant enamel loss. Here there are only 2 small areas of missing enamel. All of the areas that shade light - almost white - show some discoloration and lines in the enamel but none missing. Just above the right eye there is a light area that matches the swirl on both cheeks but does appear to be a chip - because of the light cheek areas it blends in perfectly. Then on the tip of the upper lip there is a chip in the lighter blue area.
The body color is a deep jade green which on the top fin shades to a medium and then to a light green. The waves of enamel on the tail shade from deep green to nearly white. The underbelly scales are mostly pearlescent white with turquoise blue highlights on the upper chest and the area just above the tale.
The enormous tale is wavy and undulating and has two folds that have been accomplished by adding separate pieces.
The entire piece is gold washed on sterling grade silver. It weighs an amazing 118 gms.
There is a chain with a bail so that it can be hung for decoration.
We hope you can appreciate the rareity of this find and can understand that this can become the heart of a very fine collection. In a lifetime you may never see another like it! We saw one come to auction about 6 months ago in terrible condition (missing most of the enamel) and it went for over $1,000.00!
The next to last photo shows this fish alongside a 3 1/2" one. The last photo shows a recently acquired big one like this one but in blue!!
