1950s Rose Embroidered Silk Satin Custom-Made Sheath and Coat - Sz Small 4-6

The photos do not do this fabulous embroidered blast from the past any justice. In the days of Mad Men and hats, this ensemble would have been an exceptional standout.

Clearly designed to be worn by a sexy, petite woman, this outfit consists of a form-fitting sheath dress with a demure boatneck in the front and a low-dipping scoop in the back. It has a short-sleeve over coat. It is worthy to note that the hem of the coat is about 2 inches shorter than the dress which was a typical design element of the era. The coat is fully lined in solid champagne silk satin. All seams in the dress are bound and the hem is hand finished with tape. High quality workmanship.

I hate to admit this, but I distinctly remember my mother dressing in a champagne colored silk satin dress for a formal party. That was in 1957 and I would be willing to bet that this outfit dates to that timeframe. It has a nylon zipper with individual teeth, which based on my research, further substantiates the dating of this outfit.

These pieces have an elaborate, all-over satin stitched embroidered pattern of roses executed in shades of brown and champagne. The front neckline, the pocket trim, and the sleeve trim is finished with solid color champagne silk satin.

We guesstimate the size as a 4-6 but there is no label to cinch that down, so make sure you go by the sizes supplied:

Sheath: Bust approx. 34 1/2" - note that there are deep and long angled darts that help to shape the sheath and define a waist, 34" waist, 36-36 1/2" hips, 40 1/2" long. 5" slit vent in center back bottom.

The over coat which is not designed to close in front is 38 1/2" long.

The two pieces have been dry-cleaned and are in superb, wearable condition.
