For a minute I thought I had made up the word 'splendiferous' but the dictionary defines it as "extraordinarily or showily impressive" and what better description of these wonderful plates?!!
There are 12 - each in fantastic condition and most likely never used other than to display. These 12 plates are each 10 1/2" in diameter. Each features the wonderful burnished gold achieved by only the finest china makers such as Lenox, Minton's, Royal Worcester, and some Limoges companies.
The difference between these and some of the other makers plates is that these are very thin and the china is translucent (in one of the photos you can actually see the shadow in the center such that the Lenox hallmark appears as a shadow in the center!). They are delicate but sturdy - a characteristic of all Lenox-made wares. Or course, their early china pieces are the most gorgeous and the most desireable. This bears the green Lenox mark. These plates were first made in the 1937. They were subsequently discontinued - probably in the late 1940s.
The raised gold border features a multitude of gold 'jewels' and a mesmerizing scrolling pattern of vines and swags, leaves and flower heads. The cobalt blue is a very, very deep shade. The center is a light off-white.
Please note that we took many, many photos. Some of the same views with different lighting - with or without a flash. If you need to see other views, let us know and we'll send them on to you. Also, the next to last photo shows the same view side by side. One taken with the flash, the other without. One of the more notable things is that in the photo on the left you can see the thinness of the china as in the center, the Lenox hallmark shows through! The surrounding area in the center is all shadow.
Display, use, and adore them! They will serve you well for many, many years to come!
Please note what a viewer wrote to us recently: "I used to be a manager for Lenox china in NY and had one of these charger plates on display in our 'museum' case. I wish I could afford your lovely set of 12, but I cannot. I was just wondering if you would be interested in selling one to me? I remember it being one of the most beautifully done plates I had ever seen! I have a Master's Degree in decorative arts from the U. of London (England) and everyone used to talk about Meissen and Sevres as such fabulous porcelains (which I agree with). But then you look at the artistry of Lenox and the immense amount of work to produce these pieces BY HAND STILL and it's fabulous! If I win the lottery I will be in touch with you!"
