Exquisite Antique Musical Jasperware Plaque with Large Angel and 5 Smaller Angels or Cherubs - Excellent condition! After Nicholaos Gysis

Every figure is playing a musical instrument! Just as you would expect to find in heaven, eh?

They are shown floating in the clouds and certainly they make for a very pleasing composition. Each angel is rendered in great detail with 3-dimensional sculptural realism. What's truly amazing is the condition - excellent - no chips, cracks, repairs, etc.

Absolutely of Volkstedt quality in every way but it does not bear a Volkstedt hallmark. No hallmark at all, in fact. On the upper right area (see last photo - lightened in order to show up the impressed writing) there is the inscription 'nach Gysis'.

The original subject matter of this plaque was undoubtedly painted or drawn by Nicholaos Gysis and the manufacturer modelled it 'after' (the word 'nach' means after in German) him. Nicholaos Gysis was a Greek artist who studied and exhibited in Munich, Germany. He was born in Greece in 1842 and died in Munich in 1901. Gysis was well known for using musical instruments and classical or mythological subjects.

This plaque was made to be framed as the outer rim has holes that allowed it to be nailed to a frame. A previous owner but a wire hanger thru the top hole. The plaque measures 12 1/4" high x 7 1/4" wide x 1 1/4" deep (the rim is 3/8" and the 3-D figures stand an additional 4/8" above the surface).

Please note that I found an auction record for this exact piece but in an ivory colored background with olive highlights from Bonham's, December 12, 2006 and selling for $1,600.00. They identified it as Austrian based on the work 'Symphony of Spring' by Nikolaos Gysis, circa 1900.

Often mistaken for Wedgwood, jasperware plaques like this were made to emulate Wedgwood jasperware. Because many of the best Volkstedt ones feature flowing cherubs and female figures, they are considered by many to be more beautiful than Wedgwood's!
