Huge Cattleya Orchid Enamel on Silver Pin Brooch

This stunning stylized orchid pin weighs 1.7 oz. mentioned so you can imagine the heft of this very large pin. It measures 3 1/2" x 2 3/4" and is extremely three dimensional. A real standout!

We think this is the largest size in the series of orchid pins. We now have 3 sizes - 3 1/2", 2 1/2", and 1 1/2". As we are only able to list with a maximum of 9 photos we were not able to illustrate the 3 side by side, but if you go to one of the other listings (twt3143 or twt 3233) you can see them that way.

The petals and other parts are all accented by rows of shiny faceted marcasites. The 800 silver has been modelled to make the petals appear ruffled in a very skillful way to emulate the way the real-life cattleya orchid is formed. The petals are enamelled in shade of purple/mauve with a mottling of rusty-orange flecks and a great complimentary contrasting green. The center of the 'cup' features a hint of golden yellow.

On page 162 of the book, 'Antique Enameled Jewelry', a similar orchid pin is depicted. This one far exceeds that pin in size, color, and quality. Even the way the pinback spans the back of the pin shows better construction. You will be thrilled with this pin. A true knockout. I am tempted to keep it to wear as my 'signature' piece of jewelry. It is that gorgeous and that commanding of attention. So...if you see it disappear without it being marked "sold" soon, you'll know it made its way into my private collection!

The condition is outstanding - excellent in every way. On the back side the tip of one of the petals is stamped 800 with a maker's mark right above it (too tiny to photograph). We believe this is German as are many of our other figural enamels on silver or sterling that are marked Germany and we have had several German orchid pins over the years. Again...none as spectacular as this one. One of the photos shows this pin along with a green and purple butterfly pin (if still available, separately listed) on a green and purple silk jacket! Both appear camouflaged. Beautiful.

Please make sure you find our other listings of the smaller 'sister' orchid pins (if still available). Clearly by the same maker.
