This pretty 9 well candleholder is a beautifully designed menorah with ornate pierced work. It is made of brass and signed on the reverse and on the bottom, 'Oppenheim Israel'.
Incorporated into the center design are hebrew characters. We do not know what they say, but perhaps you do. The front edge of the base also has hebrew characters.
The Festival of Lights also known as Chanukah or Hanukkah, celebrates the victory of the Macabee's over horrible persecution in 127 BC. Whilst rededicating the temple, the menorah had only one day's worth of oil to light the temple but it lasted 8 days. The lighting of the menorah (today's modern version) is used to symbolically represent that miracle that happened over 2000 years ago. This menorah dates from ca. 1960.
There are 8 holders and one extra which is for the 'shamash' candle used to light all the others.
This Oppenheimer Israel menorah is in excellent condition and measures 12 1/2" x 8 1/2".
