Very Large Antique Volkstedt Erotic Sensuous Bare Breasted Kissing Lovers Jasperware Plaque

It is very dimensional with the solid blue background showing many details of foliage, a tree trunk, and an iris flower. It is interesting to note that we sold this same plaque recently which varied somewhat from this one in a few ways. Firstly, the color blue was much paler and secondly the iris flower on the sold plaque was white while here it is all blue.

Both figures wear diaphanous garments that barely veil their underlying bodies. In the case of the woman, both breasts are bare with nipples showing. The man has his arm around the woman and his hand is on her breast. Their lips are almost touching.

This is one of the most desireable of all the Volkstedt plaques we have had the pleasure of offering for sale. It is large at 13 1/2" x 11" x nearly 2" deep. It bares the blue Volkstedt sunburst hallmark and the word Germany by it. It dates from ca. 1894-1906. Incised on the top rim near the hanger are the numbers 10 611.

The condition is excellent but there are a couple of things worth noting. One is shown in the photo with the star at the right side of one of the scrolls. A tip of the scroll is missing. I only noticed it when comparing it to the photos of the other plaque I had. In addition, there are white specs of paint in some of the deep crevices. My guess is that someone splattered some paint when doing a ceiling without removing this from the wall. On one side there are even remnants of brush strokes. I have done nothing to touch up the photos so you will see how inconsequential these spots are - really mentioned only so there will be no surprises.
