Large 2 3/4" Enamel on Sterling Silver British 1919 Compact - Two Shades of Blue

In excellent condition, this large enamel compact has several distinctive features.

It is done in two shades of blue - a deeper sky blue on the outer rim and a pale, baby blue on the inner circle. Each enamel area is executed over a different machine-engineered groundwork. The inner silver ring that divides the colors is a very thin and interesting touch. It is scalloped and chased - a very intricate detail on an item such as this.

The back side shows a wonderful machine-engineered design emanating outwards from a plain silver circlet that measures 5/8" in diameter.

The interior is in extremely fine condition also. The upper lid contains the mirror and the base contains remnants of a fine powder over which is still the original screen!

The hinge works smoothly and the clasping mechanism is very snug and secure. Still a very functional compact. This was an expensive compact from its very beginnings. It is quite thin and measures oly 1/4" thick.

We identified the maker's mark as belonging to J. Gloster of Birmingham and the date mark is for 1919. In just a short while it can be said to be an antique (100 years). To think it was made a year after WW I, and right on the cusp of the Art Deco era! In fact it echoes that fact - a transitional work bridging the Edwardian era to the Art Deco era.

As previously stated, this compact is in truly excellent condition.
