This is a wonderful momento from the heart of the Art Deco period, ca. 1920s. It immediately evokes the flapper era and all the hoopla surrounding that time. You can just imagine Gregory Peck or Cary Grant taking out a cigarette from the matching cigarette case and flipping the lid on this holder to retrieve a match! Or perhaps it held their cards, and they retrieved one to give the gal of the moment! Or, as the monogram indicates, perhaps this belonged to Red Buttons!
Whoever owned it, is now ours and soon to be yours!
It is made of solid sterling silver with 14K inlaid stripes and a gold wash on the interior. The total weight is 47 grams.
It measures 3" x 1 15/16". The smooth working hinge runs the full width.
The condition is excellent barring the surface scratches that lets us know it really was used. While adding several additional photos we noticed that there is a very slight misalignment from back to front and side to side. The additional photos were taken to show how when flared open all the stripes align and there is nothing amiss at the hinge, yet when closed there is this slight misalignment (less than 1/16"). You can not see it when closed from about the first inch from the hinge.
Any Tiffany item from this period is considered desireable and attracts cross collectors (sterling, Tiffany, tobacciana, etc.).
Marked Tiffany & Co., 14K and sterling on the inside centerpiece.
