Drawn by English architect, Thomas Allom and appearing as one of the 100's of engravings in the 4 volume edition from the 1840's, "China Illustrated", this tinted engraving is spectacular. Spectacular because of its expert rendering and that it captures a moment in history so well.
This scene shows people in an outdoor scene appearing to go about their ordinary daily endeavors. It features a stone bridge and a waterway with boats and foot traffic. Lovely houses with trees in the background. Hand tinted. Excellent condition. Framed under glass.
The frame is a vintage, shadow-box style and the interior is gilded while the exterior is painted in a "Chinese Red". When hung - all you see is the gilded interior framing. This is one of 7 recently acquired and listed that are all framed the same way. The matte is a double matte. The matte closest to the image is a gold color while the off-white matte has yellowed with age.
The frame size is 15 1/2" x 12 1/5" and the image size is 7 3/4" x 5".
Please note that the least expensive site selling, untinted and unframed copies, is asking $225.00 each for these!
