Large Russian Handpainted Legend Lacquer Papier Mache Box "Merchant Kalasnikov"

Probably one of the two most dramatic scenes in this collection, this box is extraordinary. It is Kholui and is artist signed and entirely handpainted. Ca. 1990-93. It is a representation of the legend known as "Merchant Kalasnikov". The entire lid is covered in a very detailed scene with a roiling reddish/orange sky. Onion domes atop steeples of a church are the backdrop to the couple. Also, a young woman is shown behind them moving in the opposite direction. Magnificent. It is hinged and measures approximately 6 1/4" x 4 1/4" and is 1 3/8" high. Excellent condition. Really extraordinary. Please note that the closeup photo's colors are way off. The distance shot of the entire lid shows the colors somewhat more accurately. The sky is really a much richer orange-red.
