Here is a hand-painted silk-on-wood fan, with a shiny silver foiled edging along the top.
6 5/8" long.
These were sometimes made of sandal wood to create a fragrant breeze when whisked, however we do not detect that when we wave it.
The wood is a very dark brown; the silk is black. The painting is pink, white, red, yellows, blues and green; flowers, with a stream, appears to be.
We are unsure of the dating for this. It was with a group of all Edwardian and Victorian era items, however we understand that over the years some stored items can be mixed and misplaced. The foil edging and design appear more war era (1940s), than earlier, to us.
These are perfect for hot summer evenings, balmy concerts under the stars; we've used many hand fans over the years, especially when we lived in Jakarta and Honolulu.
