Vintage Early Cool-Ray Polaroid Sun Glasses #80 Glitter Sunglasses

Amazing authentic cool ray vintage sunglasses in a glittery, shimmering plaid.

White plastic frames laced with a novelty chain-stitch harlequin print in colors of shiny metallic gold, red, blue and green in a cats-eye shape.

Lightweight dark green cool ray polaroid lenses are set into the plastic (not screw-set in). These are marked "Cool-Ray Polaroid (registered R mark) 80 on the inside of the right temple (arm).

These measure

5" from hinge to hinge.

Each temple is about 5" long on the bottom side;

the slight curve down starts at about 4 7/8".

These are in amazing condition; the front frame is straight and true, and they lay perfectly flat, with the left temple folded in first.

They come with the original plastic case ( which is also marked Cool-ray Polaroid along the bottom) AND the original paper insert. There is a tiny dark spot on the plastic case (it can be seen in the photos), the paper insert is perfectly fine with no tears or rips.

The front of the insert reads:

"what you should know about your NEW COOL-RAY POLAROID sun glasses"

while the back reads:

"COOL RAY Inc. 80 Heard St. Chelsea, Mass."

and the inside reads:

"First of all, it's a polarizer, the best known device for comfortable viewing under all conditions. The plastic polarizing lens has the unique property of combing out irritating glare reflected from road surfaces, sand, snow and water. It is your absolute guarantee for comfortable vision under the sun.

The lens in this sun glass has a definite case hardened organic surface. This new surface, the result of years of research, is specifically designed to resist normal abrasion and increase the useful life of the lens.

Your new sun glass is light to wear and extremely durable. The superb optical quality of the plastic lens, coupled with the smartly styled comfortable frame design, makes it a "seeing instrument" that you can wear all day without fear of fatigue or eyestrain.

Best results from your Cool-Ray Polaroid sun glasses will be obtained when they are clean. Wipe them carefully with a dry clean cloth or soft tissue. Use the case furnished with these sun glasses for protection when not in use."

These fabulous eyeglasses are definitely wearable, but we suggest to consider them as more of a collectible, especially with the accompanying original insert and plastic carrying case. Another thing to remember is that these earlier sunglasses aren't nearly as sturdy as today's models; the plastics were and are much more fragile than now.

Polaroid lenses were first developed in the very late 1930s, in part to aid pilots to see better while they were flying. Although these lenses are much more lightweight than most that we've handled (making them earlier, rather than later) we estimate these to be late 1940s, very early 1950s due to the shape of the frames, and the red, white and blue color way used.
