Incredible 1950s reversible padded souvenir baseball style bomber jacket from Japan with ribbed knit cuffs and hem, and raglan-cut sleeves.
One side is black velveteen with a magnificent roaring white snow leopard embroidered on the back and on each front yoke, with embroidered dragons (also in white and red) down each arm. The black side's embroidery is in excellent condition.
The reverse side is a contrasting white/light gray/silvery quilted satin decorated with a flying eagle in white embroidery with a mountain peak in the background. There are eagles on each shoulder on the front, too. We found one small ares where about a 7/8" area along a seam needs to be re-stitched, and a few small snags in the embroidery on the satin side.
Each side says "Japan" across the top of the back.
There are angled slash welt/bound pockets on each side; there is a mon embroidered in golden yellow on the inside of one of the black pockets, while the pockets on the satin side? one is lined with royal blue, the other in a dark moss green.
42" chest measured from underarm to underarm laid flat across the front (21"), and then doubled.
20" long from center back of the neck to the hem of the ribbed knit.
since these have raglan cut sleeves which allows a variance for shoulder width, to measure the sleeve length, we measure from the neck point to the sleeve hem: 28.5" long
If you are interested in this as a wearable, rather than a display or collectible, we HIGHLY recommend comparing the measurements of our jacket, with a similarly styled jacket of your own.
We photographed this on our female mannequin; these are considered menswear or unisex, generally.
Reversible YKK zipper.
If you are familiar with these jackets you are aware that the ribbing is often the first part to show wear; however, these are incredibly clean. The waistband has relaxed, and has stretched a bit; it is no longer a tight, clenching rib.
The only flaw of note is that the padding of the jacket, in our opinion, feels "lumpy" which again, is typical of these old reversible, (padded) jackets; there is also a small 1/4" L-shaped tear on the right arm at the top of the dragon embroidery: photo enclosed.
Highly collectible; great color contrast combination, fabulous embroidery.
