1960s vintage Ceil Chapman, cocoa brown silk, cocktail dress. Lavish glass beaded bodice is to die for. The overlay skirt, cut on the bias in the most sheer silk. Bust 33", under bust 28", waist 24", hip FREE, Length from shoulder to hem is 38 inches and waist to hem is 22".
The one piece, sleeveless dress has a very fitted bodice, gathered cummerbund style waist and HUGE billowing skirt. The inset waist is sheer silk over crepe. It is gathered tightly and is reinforced with light boning.
This dress, with back metal zipper closure is lined in very high quality, finely woven rayon crepe.
Bodice and straps are completely covered in silver sequins that have rows of glass seed beads undulating through the design. There are tassels of clear glass seed beads that hang in groups. Above each group of beads is a prong set rhinestone. This beading is all done by hand.
The circular skirt joins the bodice at the natural waistline. The over skirt is sheer silk. It is cut on the bias and floats like a cloud over the crepe lining.
Label: Ceil Chapman. size small ( this dress is very fitted )
The dress is in ABOVE excellent condition. There are no holes rips, snags or signs of significant. There are no weak seams. The under arms are lovely, with no fading, discoloration or spots. The rich cocoa brown color is vibrant on all layers.
I found very small 3 spots on the skirt and lining. They are 1/2 to 1 inch across. They are impossible to photograph! Very light and do not show in the yards and yards of fabric.
The dress has not been dry cleaned. There are a few loops of missing beads. I found 4 but there could be more. The rhinestones and sequins are fabulous
The white taffeta under skirt has several stains that of course do not show at all when the dress is worn.
Ceil Chapman was reportedly Marilyn Monroe's favorite fashion designer. Other Hollywood notables who wore her creations were: Elizabeth Taylor, Deborah Kerr, Greer Garson, Grace Kelly and Aretha Franklin
