This is an original, 1918, Drug Store calender from Parma, Idaho. It features an original print by the French artist, Gabriel Emile Niscolet, a listed artist, (1856 - 1921). A beautiful print.
Subject: Portrait of a Nurse from the Red Cross, titled BLESSED ARE THE MERCIFUL, in very light print below the seated nurse. The young nurse, in uniform wears a RED CROSS band on her arm. Her cap also has a red cross. She is seated next to a table and is knitting.
Calender issued for: The City Drug Store, H.J. Sloan, Ph.G. PARMA IDAHO, for the holiday season of 1917 to be used during the year of 1918. Issued during World War I that began in Europe on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918.
Complete unused calender. Print is attached to light colored EMBOSSED paper.
Front of the small calender is embossed with : "Peace and Prosperity to You and Yours 1918".
Silk ribbon at the top for hanging shows some wear. as does the lightweight silk cord that holds the actual calender.
Embossed background has a stanza from a poem: " O Woman! in our hours of ease, Uncertain, coy and hard to please, And variable as the shade, By the light quivering aspen made, When pain and anguish wring the brow, A ministering angel, thou." Scott
Cream colored background has a few TINY fly spots. Print has no bends, tears or discoloration. The print is in soft colors and may appear more vivid in the pictures.
Measurements of entire piece: is 12 x 7 & 1/2 inches. The portrait is approximately 5 X 7 inches.
Historical points of nursing, the Red Cross, World War I, Medicine and Costume and Fashion of the late part of the last century.
Overall excellent condition. Minor edge wear.
