Figural Pocket Corkscrew - Victorian

This 1875ish corkscrew measures 5" in length. Assembled for use its length increases to 6 1/4". The screw is a top quality double-helix, still with a finger-puncturing point. Additionally the hat of the jolly chappy serves as a Codd bottle opener. The Codd mineral water bottle (invented by Hiram Codd from Suffolk, UK.)incorporated a glass marble and a rubber washer which, under the pressure of the gas in the mineral water, effectively sealed the bottle. The hat of the figure pushes down the glass marble, releasing the gas pressure, thus permitting the carbonated drink to be poured. Condition excellent.
