1965 Ad - PAN AM - 'Theatre-in-the-Air'
This '60s Pan American World Airways ad features a photo of headset-wearing airline passengers enjoying a movie "on a screen mounted at just the right height for lean-back-and-take-it-easy viewing" (judging by the inset cabin picture of multiple, small screens at luggage rack level, I beg to differ). The "Theatre-in-the-Air is ten shows in one - a movie plus nine continuous shows designed for private listening".
Many vintage ads can act as "time capsules," reflecting the styles and sensibilities of a particular era. Old transportation ads often evoke a strong sense of nostalgia - even for those that had yet to be born! Retro airlines ads may conjure up the glamour and excitement of Jet Age commercial air travel that was treated as a special occasion - people dressed up, and in-flight meals were served on china with proper, non-plastic cutlery by "stewardesses" in crisp, form-fitting uniforms.
Pan Am, a now-defunct airline, has seen an increase in interest, marketing, and merchandising of its brand (with its iconic blue globe logo) since ABC announced the launch of a television series bearing its name in 2011.
This LARGE 1960s advert measures 10 1/4" x 13 3/4" (approx.). The image of this Mid-Century advertisement has been accommodated completely by a large-format scanner. This Sixties print ad is in very good condition with little of the attendant signs of age & wear and is eminently suitable for framing - ideal for the collector of vintage aviation memorabilia or travel-related ephemera.
