Craftsman Studios was an Arts and Crafts era through 1950s coppercraft shop operating out of Laguna Beach and Los Angeles California, producing hand wrought copper home and giftwares, occasionally working in brass and silver. I've been collecting Craftsman copper items for nearly 30 years, and until now, I've never seen a non-metal item bearing their name. This pottery vase is a first for me - it's clearly marked in black paint on the bottom "100 H.H. Craftsman Studio - Laguna Beach Cal".
The mustard-colored cylindrical vase is made from heavy yellow clay with what looks like a salt type glaze. It's 5 inches tall by 3-1/4" diameter. The front has a stylized hand painted floral motif of red flowers and green leaves, the base has a smeary black band hand applied under the glaze. I have not cleaned off the age patina around the rim or inside (there isn't much - just honest, age-appropriate light dust film). I did take a damp paper towel to the writing on the bottom to make sure it wasn't made recently with a Sharpie and it did not come off. There are no chips, flakes, or cracks. An exceptionally rare find for any Craftsman collector.
