Hollywood Ceramics Clown on Train Engine Figural Nursery Planter
This charming figural planter was probably a florist's nursery item, a houseplant gift to the parents of a new baby. Made in California by Hollywood Ceramics, a company more known for their modernistic Eames era designs, it features a waving clown sitting atop a pink and blue train engine with anthropomorphic face. The planter is 7-3/4" high to the top of the clown's hat, 5" high at the rim of the back opening and about 7" long overall. There is some wear to the cold paint of the clown's polka dot suit and red-mittened hands, as well as to some of the gold trim. The planter appears to have a fine, allover crackle glaze which may be age crazing but looks intentional. No chips, flakes, or cracks. The underside is marked "Hollywood Ceramics, Made in California ©".
