This ad for Cream of Wheat features a billboard illustrating their trademark African-American chef, "Rastus". Four boys are sitting on top, each with a snowball, while a fifth boy peeks out from behind the left side.
This ad was illustrated by artist Edward V. Brewer and copyrighted in 1923 by Cream of Wheat, and is the inside front cover of the January 1924 issue of Needlecraft magazine. The reverse of the ad is the magazine cover, which is an illustration of a woman wearing a knitted pullover jacket (see second photo).
When compared to the other Cream of Wheat ad just three years previously in this publication, a big change in attitude to blacks can hopefully be seen.
Condition is very good – the page has been carefully torn from the magazine on the right side of the page, and there is a tiny tear and crease at the bottom left. The page is creased at the right. It measures 10-1/2 by 13 inches.
This item will be protectively packaged with a backing board in a plastic sleeve.
