Stoke Poges Church – History and Photos in 1923 Fund-raising Booklet, Gray's Elegy

This booklet is a history of St. Giles Church in Stoke Poges, printed in 1923 as a fund-raiser for needed repairs. The church is famous as the setting for Thomas Gray's poem "Elegy in a Country Churchyard". The poem is printed on the last four pages of the booklet, together with a picture of Gray's tomb.

The history of the church can be dated to 1107, and the last page is a listing of all the vicars from 1107 to 1912. There are five black-and-white photos of the church, and a diagram of the floor plan. The booklet measures 5-1/2 by 8-1/2 inches, and contains 20 pages printed on glossy paper. The cover is a heavyweight red paper.

Also included are three sepia-toned postcards from the 1920s, in very good unmailed condition.

Condition is very good overall, with minor wear at the corners and a chipped corner on the back cover and last page.

This item will be protectively packaged with a backing board and plastic sleeve.
