Magnificent and rare antique French Charles X to Napoleon III era 15" Boulle inlaid chest, a marked VERVELLE piece with opulently appointed interior and marvelous condition! A treasure of a box, rather large in size and surely made to store the owner's sewing & vanity needs along with writing accoutrement, jewelry and/or valuables. Gorgeous exterior in a very Napoleon III style jet black ebony veneers, the carved trim around the lid is more often seen in Charles X era works though so this piece could date between. Elegant brass strip inlays all around, the front and lid both have a gorgeous, large Boulle style inlay consisting of ornate reticulated brass, copper or bronze and mother of pearl. Definitely of the quality you would expect from Vervelle, one of a handful of the finest French ebenistes including Tahan, Diehl & Sormani to name a few. The box is oversized, as noted, is in elegant condition both inside and out. The interior is entirely in rosewood veneers and boasts a lift-out upper tray with brass inlaid compartment lids and sewing/vanity implements. Two drawers beneath, the upper with six compartments and the lower with just two larger spaces. Just in from France, this one is not to be missed!
Very good condition. It arrived with broken feet so the turned wood feet are not original but antique, salvaged from another box of the same age. Also, the lower front of the right side had a small section of veneer broken (visible in the images). I did notice that one or two of the brass strip inlays on the sides were replacements. No missing inlays, as you can see. The interior is in great shape with just a few missing sewing or vanity tools, the scissors and likely the bone pieces are not original but it does have a 2-tone silver & vermeil stiletto and thimble which are surely original. There is a side-to-side split in the bottom of the upper drawer and notches on the insides of the lower drawer meaning it's missing the smaller partitions seen in its partner. There are only very slight evidences of age otherwise, and all the hardware and inlays (inside and out) speak to the exquisite quality of workmanship. "Vervelle Aine" signature on the lock bar, working lock & key. As seen, the piece weighs 8 lbs, 10 ounces (3.9 kg). See pictures for all measurements..
