Housed in the old early Victorian era domed presentation boxes that is fitted to brooch and earrings, this set is beautifully preserved and will be a thrill to display, own and wear. The exceptionally fine 3-D bouquets worked entirely in human hair are masterpieces of the art, and raise mourning jewellery to a higher level. The backing on the brooch is mother of pearl, but the hair is not worked on mother of pearl. I believe it's probably worked on thin natural wafer, which is normally the case for these. The earrings have locket-like backs of glass, though nothing is mounted therein, and one glass panel has a crack across it, visible in our images. Tested gold is 12k on the brooch mount but 14k-15k on the earrings. This is not unusual for the old jewellery as even on a single piece we do sometimes see that a goldsmith has used a variety of gold alloys. Large, luxurious and perfect to wear, these will thrill their owner!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. We've noted the imperfections on our images so you can inspect (enlarged) but in person, this set is just superb. The hair art within is exceptionally fine, perhaps the best we've seen in years. No floating bits, it's perfectly arranged and maintained within the glass locket of the jewellery pieces. Brooch and earrings come complete in the wonderful old domed Georgian to Victorian box as shown. The set may well be Georgian, but I'm guestimating them 1840s, give or take 10 years. Box could possibly be older. It is not a perfect fitted box for the set, so could be a marriage of set to presentation case, but it displays the set beautifully as you can see. Exterior shows some age, but is lovely for display.
