Magnificent & rare antique French hand painted portrait miniature on early celluloid: a full rendering of the 1814 "Napoleon I at Fontainebleau" by Hippolyte Delaroche in the original ebonized wood & rosewood shadow box style frame! This is definitely one of the finest and most unique miniatures of Napoleon I that we've had the pleasure to offer. Not only is it a rare full body pose but Napoleon is depicted in his 'defeat', shown slumping in a seat after his abdication at Fontainebleau (the original Delaroche painting is on display at the Musee de l'Armee in Paris)! Entirely hand painted on a large celluloid panel, protected under two layers of glass and still in beautiful condition. On celluloid yes but this is one for the serious Napoleon collectors. One of TWO rare old Napoleon paintings that we're adding this week so, be sure to browse a bit while you're with us. Thanks!
Very good condition. The frame is great with just a bit of wear to the ebonized finish on the outer frame. There is a bit of paint loss or wear at the edges, likely due to the inner glass panel. See pictures for measurements.
