I say 'Victorian' because people don't think to search for 'Napoleon III', which is the French equivalent and is the era from which this set comes to us. It is always a treat to find these old French sewing sets complete and in the original case, and this one is just that: A c.1850 French made sewing or embroidery tools set in .800/1000 pure French silver, marked with the boar's head mark used in France since 1838 to guarantee that grade of silver. The .800/1000 is more often used in sewing and small vanity items owing to it being stronger and less prone to bending or damage in small items such as these where .950/1000 pure silver is a bit too soft a metal. The set is complete, as noted, right down to the bodkin. They pieces all match and are of the Napoleon III revival of the original Napoleonic 'Empire' style. They are original to one another, as you can see: Scissors, needle case, stiletto, thimble and bodkin. The case is beautiful old wood, and is in excellent condition.
Very good condition throughout, this one appears to have been used and has suffered a break in the handle of the scissors (noted in our images for your review), yet they're sturdy and restored and apart from the line, can be used and are perfect for the seamstress or needlework enthusiast in your family. Circa 1850 - 1870 (Napoleon III era), it's newer than most of our sewing sets. I think this might be a replacement thimble as its' slightly small for the fitting, but it's a perfect match for the 18k gold on silver 'vermeil' set. Do look through, as we have a particularly expansive and opulent selection of fine sewing boxes and etui just now, all sold separately.
