Excellent Antique Victorian Porcupine Quill Box, Ceylon

Along with the other and fairly vast varieties of Grand Tour traveler's souvenirs, these old boxes from Ceylon** found their way into Victorian homes as evidence of the broad travels and exciting experiences acquired by the newly well-to-do industrialists and their families. The Grand Tour might well be pointed out to be that one tradition of the era from which springs that old saying "Too much is never enough", which of course perfectly describes the true Victorian home. From bulbous glass domed displays of varieties of exotic birds, to shrunken heads and everything in between, the Victorian aesthetic and interest in all things 'nature' certainly created an interesting interior for the home of the most well traveled, and of course was the wellspring from which great tales of exotic experience might arise in conversation. The quill box with it's rough hewn ebonized wood framework and inlaid dots of ivory within which actual porcupine quills are cut and placed gives a very interesting accent that, today, works in homes and offices decor from starkly modern black/white interiors to those more closely resembling the true Victorian home remade today (and just about anything in between, as well). This was probably a cigar box in a grand hall or smoking/pool room of some grand Victorian mansion at one time, though it hasn't any residual odor or stain that would mark it as having housed tobacco (happily!). Ready for any use you can think of for it now, or as just that special accent to your own perfectly studied interior and aesthetic.

**Some say Africa, American indian-made - others say other origins, but research attests to them being Ceylonese.

Very good condition for age and type. The box is complete and well preserved, no big gaps in the quills which is often a problem in these old boxes. Mid-1800s souvenir, some of the quills appear to have a bit of a hollow look to them, which is natural deterioration of a natural product of a formerly live animal, but for the greatest part, the quills look fantastic. No odors, as noted. Hinge works well, no warping. There is an escutcheon for a lock, but the actual lock is not in the box, so one can be installed if you should wish to have a box that locks - escutcheon is there already. Good sized - and the quills are obviously from a monstrously large porcupine.
