We surely must have one of the very best collections of antique sewing sets in the world, or have had if you count in all those that have already sold. I'm so pleased to add this one, surely English in origin. The outer case is truly a magnificent display of finest cognac to chocolate-colored natural shell, separated with silver stringing that's typical of the larger boxes and of English ones in particular. This one is just stunning sitting in display (I know because it's on one of my end tables right now, along with a couple of suitably fine tea caddies), and when you or your guests succumb to that natural temptation to open it (isn't that what we all are just forced to do, really?), you'll find it filled with all of the original late Georgian to earliest Victorian sewing implements, including a fabulous little tape measure case, sterling silver handled scissors, thimble, pin cushion and stiletto or bodkin-like tool. Just beautiful! A fine set by any standard!
Good to very good condition throughout. The box or etui, casket, is large and beautiful. The finest panels of shell used to greatest advantage. Natural inner lip trim entirely in place on box base and lid. Implements show some age and use but are all original but the scissor blades have been replaced (using antique blades from a salvaged scissor). The interior red velvet lining is worn and has some discoloration around the edges. Some denting to the silver implements and, while I can see a red ribbon in the measuring tape tool, I can't get it out and don't know its condition. There is a small chip to the veneer on the left upper front side and what looks like a triangular restoration just below it (left side of the box, not on the lid). See pictures for measurements.
