Antique English Victorian Papier Mache Book Slide, Holder, Bookends, MOP Inlays

A rather rare bit of fine old Victorian papier mache, this one is a folding book slide or book holder, as you can see. I've had all manner of fine old mother of pearl inlaid and hand painted papier mache items through the years, from cigar cases to arm chairs and everything in between, but this is the first we've run across a book stand, and it's really quite wonderful. As the photos show, it folds flat for storage, but hinged and decorative side panels 'ends' fold up to hold a stack of books, and expand as your tabletop or desktop display books expand in number. Measurements are in our photos. This item would have been used in Victorian homes, and made c.1850-70, when papier mache was all the rage in England and around Europe. A fine sampling of the variety of items made can be viewed in the V&A Museum in London, or in the relatively new 'Musee des Arts Decoratif' in the rue Rivoli side of the Louvre in Paris.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, this one might miss a tiny nip of mother of pearl here or there, but not among the primary inlays that show up as pearlescent shimmer florals on both ends, and along the trim border. The paintings on each end are done by hand and are each very beautiful floral sprays. No chips or breaks, and no restoration or repairs that we can detect. The very minor issue would be that the hinges are allowing sides to hyper-extend slightly, but that will right itself with nothing more than a little shim, and is so minor, it's not likely to even be noticed if your slide is full.

NOTE: CS Antiques: This item belongs to my grandson, Connor, who has turned 10 and now has begun his own little business in antiques. He's thrilled to offer you this item, and thrilled to look forward to his upcoming 'buying' trip to France and Italy later in the year. We hope you'll enjoy his 'picks'. He's so excited to see if he'll make a little profit in his first business venture. And 'Gram' is thrilled to have three 10-year olds to share this interest with, too.
