Rare Antique Georgian English Portrait Miniature Depicting A Loving Mother and her Baby, c. 1810-40
A rare 'Madonna' pose from the English Georgian era, this doting mother and her loving baby are a spectacular treat and a charming image of familial maternal love and bonding. The intimacy of gown and pose are further enhanced by the congenial inclusion of a tiny chair with booties hung over the top, the baby's gown laid on a small table and an ivory baby brush and flow blue china wash bowl on the table upon which the Mother rests her elbow. Perhaps a portrait before the child was blessed, or just an intimate peek at changing time. One can't overlook the pose of this Georgian Madonna. The artist has captured the love in the Mother's eyes and a slight smile of contentment on both Mother and child. Unsigned, but the appeal is that of a small masterpiece.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. There are no losses to the thin wafer upon which the painting has been accomplished with gauche, though a very very small bit of paint loss is seen in the lower left corner (beneath the table), which shows up in our greatly enlarged scans of the wafer, but almost not at all in the painting in its frame. The frame is a Georgian period wooden frame with thick applied gesso adornments, some slight portions of which are missing. Our photos show it well. The overall effect is magnificent!
