After the famous portraitist, Nattier, this is a portrait on wafer of the Duchesse de Chateauraux, initialed by the artist who has done such a beautiful job in this miniature, simply 'E.A.'. Just in from Israel, and a wonderful item never offered online at all, this spectacular portrait miniature would be treasure enough for it's beauty and fine condition, but add to it the gorgeous 19th century faux tortoise shell (casein) & ormolu frame, and it is a real show stopper! Yes, that is a full thick panel of antique tortoise shell on the backside, which makes you just want to show this one off on an easel, don't you agree, so the fine old shell can be seen, too. Nice larger size, and beautifully crafted, with an inner tortie mat that is half-round in shape. What a beauty! We believe it has its origin in France or Austria, but there are no markings to tell us for certain.
Very good to excellent, without damage or chips/cracks on either the thin wafer it's painted on, or the fine antique faux tortoise shell frame. A treasure!
