A beautiful and high-sheen English tortoise shell cased sewing set, c. 18870-1900m late Victorian to earliest Edwardian era, from Mappin & Webb, a very highly respected name in London's market. The equivalent of Tiffany in the USA, Mappin & Webb were also purveyors of the finest luxury goods. The set you see here certainly fits that description, and is complete with the original sewing tools and even the original packets of needles tucked just as they were back then, in fittings in the interior lid.
Very good to excellent condition, no flaws to note. This must have been a gift to a Grand Tour traveler, who tucked it away as a treasure, instead. It has slight corrosion on the steel just from age, but no breaks or evidence of use. Case is superb, one of the more beautiful ever, and a wonderful sewing kit for the embroiderer or collector.
