Antique Large Victorian Era Italian Micro Mosaic Brooch, The Forum Roman Ruins, Micromosaic (in Box)
The box is original to this fabulous Roman Micromosaic brooch, and it shows it off so beautifully, we've decided it MUST stay with it. First the box: it is a leather-clad Victorian box, beautifully preserved with its domed top in lovely form. The box is beautiful when the case is closed, but you'll have it open at all times, I know, to show off your souvenir of Rome's mid-1800s mosaic trade, truly a Grand Tour souvenir. This absolutely stunning and good-sized work of mosaicist's art is a fine depiction of The Forum, part of the most famous of the Roman ruins, in tiny tesserae. The onyx or black glass basin into which the mosaics are worked has housed them all perfectly, and bears no cracks or loss at all. I've scanned the brooch so you can see it more clearly than the photos, which have left it a bit blown-out looking. No problems to report, and an extra large size makes this one a beautiful display piece as well as jewelry item. The fine micromosaic is set in pinchbeck or rolled gold. It does not test as solid gold, yet certainly has the look of it. A lovely old treasure!
