Antique Victorian Papier Mache Wall Pocket, MOP Pique Inlay
Fabulous & rare antique Victorian era papier mache magazine or stationery wall pocket with original floral needlework insert and stunning mother of pearl pique inlay! Impressively sized, this one is just over 13" square and is in remarkable condition considering the age and materials! Scalloped shaping to both the front and rear panels, original floral motif needlework insert under glass (also original). Framed in a delicate white metal wire inlay and there are five clusters of engraved mother of pearl leaves & flowers! A fabulous decorative accent for all of us Napoleon III chinoiserie or papier mache collectors! We also have a similarly crafted pair of papier mache picture frames newly listed this week, both with mother of pearl pique and all fabulous!
Very good condition. All original with no repairs or restorations that I can see. No missing inlays, mother of pearl or otherwise. The original silk or fabric side baffles are intact, only one with a roughly 2" tear at the top center. A bit of chipping around the hang ring, a tiny nip or two elsewhere and just a bit of faint crazing to the black lacquer finish. See pictures for measurements.
