Antique Napoleon III era French sewing etui, heavy solid carved with gilded silver or vermeil implements! What a wonderful old set this one is! The interior is completely fitted, actually hollowed into the solid ivory panels. Two empty spaces where it is missing a mechanical pencil and what appears to have been a small ruler or knife. The three remaining pieces are original, in French hallmarked silver with matching engraved or machined patterns and as elegant as can be. Each marked with a very tiny French poincon, or punch mark that is barely discernable as the French Boar's head, or the control mark for .800/1000 purity silver in post-1838 France. It's sometimes tough to tell if what we're looking at is a boar's head (silver) or an eagle's head (18K gold) but we're fairly sure we've made the right call on this beautiful set. That means, it has the look of being 18k gold, with this 18 - 22k gold finish, and the sturdiness and lower price of silver. What could be better, after all? The beautiful old ivory etui is in fine condition, as well. There are chips to the sides of the lid panel, inside lips at the edges of hollowed spaces and does not hinder the function of the case. Closure and hinges are both working perfectly well, in gilded bronze with the lower hinge marked 'Brevete S.G.D.G.'. A superb set, even with the flaws, isn't it just splendid!
Good condition, age and materials considered. As noted, there are chips to the outer edges of the top panel, hairlines at the edges there. There is also a glue repair to one side of the scissor handle, where it meets the steel blades. A fine set! Dates to 1850-70, perhaps slightly earlier. Silver date tells us it is post-1838. See pictures for measurements.
