Exceptional & rare antique French Napoleon III era TAHAN marked 15.5" desk or table top writer's chest with gorgeous marquetry style kingwood veneers, gilt ormolu trim, complete fitted interior with two inkwells and a lovely hand painted Sevres style plaque! Yes, marked by the world renowned TAHAN, when one looks for the best of the best, that name ranks up there with only a handful of Parisian ebanisti (Vervelle and Sormani to name a few others). Nice larger size, this one measures 15.5" wide, 12 1/8" deep and stands 9" tall! Both the serpentine shaped rear and front open up completely, stationery slots and the inkwells housed under the shaped portion and the flat front portion creates the green velvet covered writing surface. There is also a stationery or accoutrement space beneath the upper portion of the writing surface or slope. The interior has a dark rosewood veneered finish, the exterior in that lovely marquetry or parquetry inlay style kingwood veneers. A truly stunning desk or writing table top decorative accent, one you'll love to show off at every occasion!
Very good condition. The box, veneers and gilt ormolu are all in great shape, near pristine! The travel style inkwells have some wear or tarnish to the gilded tops. The only real flaw is that the Sevres style plaque has restored breaks, a thick clear coat over it now so it masks the cracks but you can see them if you look closely. Working lock and key, too!
