Antique Large Georgian 1790 12K Gold Locket, Enamel & Miniature Painting: Cupid & Psyche

A fabulous large Georgian era pendant with miniature painting on the face side, surrounded by a 12k gold frame and thick cobalt glass mat over foil, shimmers in light. The painting is of a little Cupid awakening Psyche, the mortal Princess, from her death sleep with the use of the lighted torch, in essence the Roman mythological story of being awakened from the death of 'normal' by love. A bit of wonderful sentimental or sentiment jewelry that has a hinged back locket into which, in its own time, a plaited lock of the lover's hair would have been placed, no doubt, or perhaps a miniature portrait of the beloved. It's open to be filled now with whatever token of love you might think to put there. The gold has been tested and is 12k solid gold. No damage to this one - a splendid love token for your Valentine.

Very good to excellent condition throughout, with gold tested and confirmed at 12k. The piece dates to latest 1700s or very earliest 1800s and is notably large in size, even grander in appeal and value. The painting has been greatly enlarged in our images, but it's really smaller than an inch high and is just lovely in normal view. No damage at all to this one. A superb and RARE find!
