Rare Antique Georgian 14k Gold Seed Pearl Mourning Locket Brooch
A breathtakingly beautiful antique Georgian era (late 1700s to earliest 1800s) ring in 14k gold, set with seed pearls and with a glass-covered locket into which a lock of a lost loved one's hair has been placed. The plaiting and curl of blond locks is accented by gold thread, and is just beautiful. There is a second locket to the backside of this one, so you could tuck a secret memento of your own in that spot. Hinged, it's a simple one to work with, so beautifully crafted and in a higher than usual karat gold, you can tell this one is of the finest quality throughout. The brooch is beautiful on the bodice or collar, and even more so as an enhancer on your pearl necklace (it's the way I like to use these), clasped over the strand between 2 pearls. With its secret memento tucked there against the skin. It's rare to find these locket rings fully intact as this one is, with the insert in place. The iconographic meaning of the seed pearls, you'll remember, is representative of the tears of the mourner. Fashioned this way, not a soul who sees you wearing your spectacular 200 + year old brooch will guess at its secret meaning to you, or that it holds a memento of your own in back. Yes, you could remove the blond original lock from topside, too, and replace with your own memento or small photo, but remember, part of its value is that original plaited lock of hair, and blond was the most rare in these, often the blond or lighter locks of a baby or child, sadly enough. Truly one of the prettiest of these memento token jewelry (jewellery) items we've had, and you know we have had loads of them.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. Our greatly enlarged photos show you the brooch and pearls in fine detail - better than you'd see it with the naked eye. All angles to your view. We have tested the gold, confirm it is 14k yellow gold throughout. Larger than most, this one is a full inch across.
