You know, my favorite dinner parties are with 6 of our best friends around a table, intimate conversation and sharing an evening of good food and great conversation. I love sets of 6 plates that allow me versatility, variety, and opulence for those small dinner parties. This is perfect! Looking for that something special to bring elegance and opulence to your Holiday table? It's that time of the year, and what better way to make a brilliant investment than to make it in the enhanced joy of your family gatherings; for your favorite friends around your table. This magnificent set of hand enameled dinner plates are by Spode Copeland, England, a lauded name in early English porcelains. The set carries the mark which helps us date it to late 1800s to earliest 1900s, and likely to the earlier part of that period with impressed mark as well. The mid-1800s industrialization's financial gains and taste for opulence, and expansion of import and exported goods, or turn of the century, 1900, found fine English and French tablewares such as this fine set distributed throughout the USA via shops like Tiffany, Ovingtons, and others in NYC and Chicago, and we suspect this set came to the USA with that early wave of English finery (late 1800s). Noted for their very fine bone porcelains, firms like Spode, Minton, Davenport, Coalport established the standards for soft-paste porcelain later adopted widely (post 1800). Plates are each 10.5" diameter - nice large and impressive dinner plates.
The set is in very good to excellent condition, without any of the 6 large dinner plates having a chip or crack or hairline. They are not crazed nor do they appear to have been used at table since there are no utensil marks. Brilliant cobalt blue and the gold that trims it out are dramatic framework for the entirely hand painted enamel floral bouquets that blossom at centers - each a work of fine art in their own right, and suitable for cabinet display. So beautiful when you layer and mix-match with other sets of antique plates of similar aesthetic , and flank these with fine antique French sterling silver flatware - we can help you with your table, just ask. A stunning old set - sure to please the most discriminating host or hostess and thrill all guests!
