Southwest Desert Original Oil Painting on Canvas - Pin Cushion Cactus - Plein Air Painting

Beautiful use of texture, light and color. The subject matter is called mammillaria standleyi or pin cushion cactus.
This is a plein air painting, or one that was created in the great outdoors. The term plein air means painted out in the open.
It employs the impasto technique, which is applying a thick raised paint with either a brush or knife. In this case depth and shadow are from brush strokes. It is signed Helen Abernathy in the lower right corner. From a private collection.
Biography: Helen Briggs Abernathy. (1909 – 1998) Studied at Olivet College and Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. She spent many years teaching in Evanston, Illinois. She also lived in Tucson and Charlotte, Michigan. As an artist Abernathy is best known for her desert landscapes, and rural midwest themes.
