Extraordinary Foo Dog Japanese Imari Porcelain Bowl
This extraordinary piece of porcelain features a cobalt blue under-glaze and red, green, yellow red-orange and gold over-glaze. The Foo Dog is featured prominently on the background making this a most unusual and desirable piece. The hand-painting includes flowers, leaves, and a large circular symbol. Colors include greens, reds, oranges and yellows. The decorative border on the interior and exterior is in cobalt blues, light blues, and gold. The porcelain has a gritty texture on the base, where it is not covered by glaze.
Dimensions: 3.75" high, 9.75" wide at rim, 4.5" wide at base.
The piece is unmarked. Authentic Antique Japanese Imari is unmarked except for pieces that were given as gifts and may have symbols of luck or good fortune or other symbols.
About Foo Dog: "Foo Dogs" also know as Imperial Lions or Shi are a representation of the lion and dog and are believed to have powerful mystical protective benefits. They are highly revered symbols.
Condition: There are no visible cracks, chips or repairs. This piece shows signs consistent with its age and authenticity including tiny, crack-like marks called crackling and slight deterioration or scratching of the gold glaze. Additionally there are small glaze contractions, or what looks like tiny holes or dents in the porcelain and rust spots. All these features are consistent with a piece of this quality and age.
