John and Angela Barker Artist Doll – “Dawn,” LE 23 of 25, 27”

When John joined his wife Angela, already an accomplished doll-maker, in 1989, the couple shortly became the most remarkable, internationally known doll artists of the last quarter century. They have been making a series of limited edition porcelain dolls, exquisitely dressed, ever since. However, recently the Barkers retired and their dolls, most of which sold out, are available only on the secondary market.

The high grade porcelain head and bodies that the Barkers developed feature 12 pieces with rolling shoulders, hips and upper torso, which made the stringing an engineering challenge. Among the most poseable of dolls, they all have integrated stands on wooden bases.

John handled the sculpting of the head, while Angela undertook all the wigging and costumes. Like most of their dolls, 27" Dawn Angela has a swivel head, gorgeous gray glass eyes, jointed limbs, and a lovely full of human blonde hair, which is styled in a chignon with a few small braids in the back.

Her two-piece dress includes a boned seamed, fitted black silk top with black netting and lace butterfly decoration. It ties like a corset in the back. Her full silk skirt is decorated with a 2 ½" band of intricate black lace beneath which a black silk ribbon flows around the skirt above the hem. The skirt is supported by a white flounce net petticoat, underneath which she wears white silk pantaloons trimmed with lace. Her black net stockings are complemented by black silk shoes equipped with leather soles.

Dawn has no defects, wear, or odors. She has been kept in a glass case in a darkened climate controlled room in a non-smoking home. She comes with her certificate of authenticity signed by the Barkers. She is No. 23 of LE 25. Although there are 25 copies of her body, the dolls were made with different costumes. You can find her in Warman's Dolls: A Value and Identification Guide, by R. Lane Herron, 1998, p. 216.
